Family Riots: A Night to Remember
In November 2024, Almasi Collaborative Arts brought together creatives from both the U.S. and Zimbabwe, including playwrights, designers, actors, directors, and stage managers, to present a theatrical experience unlike any other in the country. The result was Family Riots, a monumental moment in Zimbabwean theater.
About the Production
Developed during the Almasi African Playwrights Conference, Family Riots by Gideon Jeph Wabvuta took audiences on a nostalgic journey through Zimbabwean family dramas, crafted into a fully immersive theater experience.
Set in January 1998, the play unfolded during a pivotal moment in Zimbabwe's history, a time of economic hardship and civil unrest. At the heart of the story was Sidney, a black father striving to succeed in a precarious economy. His relentless pursuit of success threatened his marriage to Primrose, with whom he had built a once-idyllic life. When their son went missing amidst the food riots, long-buried secrets emerged, shaking their family to its core.
The production wove together personal struggles and larger historical events, creating a compelling family drama that reflected resilience and the human experience in a rapidly changing society.
An Immersive Experience
Family Riots was more than a performance — it was a bold new approach to theater in Zimbabwe. Alongside riveting drama, the production incorporated musical performances, exhibits, and audio experiences that transported audiences back in time. With only 45 tickets available per night, the intimate setting made every audience member feel part of the story itself.
