"Family Riots" by Gideon Jeph Wabvuta
"Family Riots" was developed during the Almasi African Playwrights Conference and takes audiences on a nostalgic journey through Zimbabwean family dramas, expertly crafted into an immersive theater experience. This isn't just a play—it's an emotional journey that will move you like never before.
About the Play
Set in January 1998, "Family Riots" unfolds during a pivotal moment in Zimbabwe’s history—a time of economic hardship and civil unrest. At the heart of the story is Sidney, a black father striving to succeed in a precarious economy. His relentless pursuit of success threatens his marriage to Primrose, with whom he built a once-idyllic life. When their son goes missing amidst the food riots, long-buried secrets emerge, shaking their family to its core.
"Family Riots" weaves together personal struggles and larger historical events, creating a compelling family drama that reflects resilience and the human experience in a rapidly changing society.
An Immersive Theatrical Experience
"Family Riots" is more than a performance—it's a bold new approach to theater in Zimbabwe. The production incorporates not only riveting drama but also musical performances, exhibits, and audio experiences that transport you back in time. With only 45 tickets available per night, the intimate, immersive setting will make you feel as though you're part of the story itself.
